Musselburgh Review

image

Musselburgh on Monday 4/1/16.
Musselburgh staged it’s 2nd meeting of 2016 and again provided good to soft, soft in places ground and this was rewarded with some good quality fields.
The opener saw the former Paul  Nicholls  inmate LAC LEMAN  stride away to a comfortable wide margin success,  now in the care of Miss P Robson who has had the horse for only around 3 weeks she certainly found a nice little race here , this one was bought by David Armstrong to add to his already decent string and although drifting to 4/1 he never looked in trouble and drew clear to win by an impressive  17 lengths,a nice result for followers of our blog!!, Mr Armstrong stated afterwards the horse would probably have a rest and a chance to settle in properly until mid summer, definitely  one to keep in the note books though.  The odds on ex Michael  Bell STRAIT OF MAGELLAN  now with Nicky Richards never looked totally comfortable he looked as if he struggled to get home on the sticky ground,he will have learned a lot and I’m sure his shrewd handler will also have learned from this outing ,expect  better next time out.
The 1320 race saw BENENDEN make his 696 round mile trip worthwhile for his connections and trainer and infrequent visitor to Musselburgh  Michael Sudamore when easily brushing aside his opponents with an 11 length success, we had put up BENEFIT IN KIND  as a possible each way bet and he managed a decent 3rd at a nice 12/1 ,he will be a much better proposition when he gets better ground and I’m sure Katie Scott will place him to win a few races of his present mark.
The 1350 handicap hurdle saw a massive gamble on Ian Jardine trained SHREWD this former Keith Dalglish inmate bought as a “Saturday horse ” for the decent flat handicaps made light work of his lenient mark of 105 and after taking up running between last 2 he drew clear using his undoubted superior flat speed and quickly put the race to bed ,I’m sure connections will be keen to strike again whilst the iron is hot or in other words before his reassessment by handicapper! !

The 1420 was supposed  to be a competitive 3 mile handicap hurdle, SIMARTHUR whose mark had dropped to a very low 96 had other ideas !! after 2 dissapointing  runs on unsuitable ground Peter Buchanan  had this one up with the pace from the get go and when pushed on from the home turn their lovely grey lad was never in any danger and still had 6 lengths to spare at the line . Neil Alexanders 7 year old BRACING ran on well from mid division to finish 2nd and I’m sure his connections will look for a race well within his capabilities and from his present mark I fancy a win is not too far away. Another to note was Sandy Thomsons 7 year old the lightly raced gelding JOHN WILLIAMS ,running in his first handicap of a mark of 102 this fella ran a decent race and was well there turning for home before tiring from 2 out  he did finish tired ,I am not sure a 3 mile hurdle on this going is ideal but I am sure Sandy will find a nice race for this one in time ,certainly one  I shall be keeping in my note book .

The main event of Mondays card was the Kilmany cup a 2 mile chase and it was a strange race for me from a form perspective , the eventual winner CHESTNUT BEN has been rather out of sorts this season and his last run at Market Rasen certainly wouldn’t  have had anyone thinking a return to the winners enclosure  was imminent, however he left previous runs behind him to battle all the way to the line and get up by 1/2 length from the W Coltherd trained AYE WELL who was also returning to something like his form from last season, he looked to have stolen the race when he kicked on coming of the last turn, jumped well, but just got ran out of it near the finish ,LIGHTENING ROD was the other horse involved  in the tight finish having been held up and looking held  3 out he stayed on really well and was closing in at a pace near the finish and his trainer Mr Easterby  would surely be looking to find a race with him and hopefully  the handicapper doesn’t give him too much for this run. The Peter Niven trained BLADES LAD was my selection and despite being up close for most of the race he made numerous errors,  one especially  bad mistake down the back where Brian Hughes done remarkably well to sit tight and eventually these mistakes took the stuffing out of him and he weakened  out of contention from 2 out ,he has a good cruising speed but will need to brush up on his jumping if he is to get his head back in front anytime soon, especially in such  competitive races as these.

The finale a bumper saw a few decent types and it gave Lucinda Russell  a double on the day when her lovely little grey gelding SAMMY B who had obviously  learned so much from the previous run here absolutely  bolted up by a comfortable  8 lengths,Lucinda also had the 3rd placed MISFITS and this former pointer might just have found Musselburgh a little tight on his first run under rules  but looks a sure fire future winner for the yard. SILVER TRIX a £3000 purchase for George Bewley ran well for  long way and certainly looks like one who we need to keep in mind once he’s had an education and goes off handicapping .
All in all a fantastic days racing for a Monday and Musselburgh  should be congratulated for staging 2 fantastic days racing in space of 4 days at start of January, and lovely to see it so well supported by all connections.

Musselburgh Monday 4/1

Musselburgh 2nd meeting of the year already and we’re only at 4th ,decent ground almost guaranteed amd it shows with the numbers and decent quality that trainers are bringing North for a run.
I have a few that I fancy to run decent races at realistic prices as readers will know value is name of game and betting E/W and covering losses is how I operate .
The opener is div 1 of the maiden hurdle amd I like the ex P Nicholls horse LAC  LEMAN  who has moved yards recently ,the horse has obviously  had issues and had a 313 day break between January where he ran at Taunton and December when he reappeared at Huntingdon, he  hasn’t been disgraced In any of his 3 runs and I fancy the form in those races would put him right into this, the other one I like is a horse I seen win a bumper at Ayr just over a year ago called CROCKETT  ,he then  ran 3rd in 2 subsequent bumpers finishing 3rd here in the last of those to a smart recruit ,he has been out on flat over summer had a 141 day break then returned to run twice on level, didn’t seem to enjoy the Southwell surface on his last run, he should strip pretty fit and if he jumps he can get into the shake up at decent odds.
In the 1320 race the Lucinda Russell trained BALLYBEN  has dropped to a mark lower than his last winning mark which was in May at Kelso ,he had a run at Doncaster in December  and although finishing  5th he ran well enough to suggest this 3pound drop will enable a big run here . Another I like in this is previous  course winner BENEFIT IN KIND who has moved yards from M Smith  to Katie Scott , he has had 3 runs all of higher marks than he now has and has run well enough to suggest he could get into this at decent odds.
The 1350 sees 2 rare visitors to Musselburgh in trainer Richard Hobson and jockey Alain Cawley . The horse NEWORLD is obviously  well thought off in the yard he was a decent maiden on the flat in France and has contested some fair races and ran well ,then he finally got it together in his last race at Fakenham when he looked like the penny had finally dropped and he stuck on gamely  to lose that maiden tag, with that behind him I expect another good run  in this.
Our last bet of the day is recent course winner BLADES LAD in the 1500 for Peter Niven  ,he won here back at end of November then headed off to Ascot to contest a hot class 3 handicap where the ground was rather softer  than ideal ,he drops back to a more realistic grade here and we can expect a decent run from this improving 7 year old.

1220 LAC LEMAN 5/2 2 PTS WIN
1220 CROCKETT 11/1 1PT E/W

1320 BALLYBEN 11/2 1 PT E/W
BENEFIT IN KIND 12/1 1PT E/W

1350 NEWORLD  7/1 1 PT E/W

1500 BLADES LAD 11/2 1PT E/W

12 PTS STAKED ON DAY.

Musselburgh and Ayr Jan 2016

A new year kicked off with 2 fantastic days racing in Scotland .On New years day we had the traditional days racing(for horses) and the famous Powderhall sprint(for humans ) won this year incidentally by a female for the 1st time in its long and illustrious  history.
Onto the equine variety of racing
and the meeting got of to perfect start for Scottish yards with Jim Goldie and Keith Dalglish landing the first 2 races with SIR CHAUVELIN landing the opener by a wide margin and AWAY FOR SLATES ridden by claimer Ryan Day staying on well to land the 2nd race. This Scottish theme was to continue later with James Ewart landing the  Hogmaneigh  Hurdle with the rapidly improving ARISTO DU PLESSIS  who despite rising up the weights continues to defy and made all to win by a comfortable 8 lengths, Sandy Thomson who had earlier won at Cheltenham  with his stable star SEEYOUATMIDNIGHT then completed an across the card double on the day when his WAKHAN  landed the 2nd last race on what had been a great day for Scottish yards.
The 2 races not landed by Scottish yards on the day went to Northern stables with Hexham based Tim Reed landing the Premier Chase with his lightly weighted INDIAN TEMPLE who raced prominently throughout and stayed on strongly whilst those behind found little and Rebecca Menzies recent course winner ROYAL MACNAB stayed on best of rest for 2nd.
The finale was won by Chris Grants lovely grey gelding DONNAS DIAMOND who after a couple of nice placed efforts found a winning opportunity on a course he has won at before and clearly he enjoys it around the East coast venue.
The show rolled on up the A71 to Ayrshire and the rain sodden ground of the past few weeks downpours meant Ayr was going to be a test for horses.
The opener went the way of the Rose Dobbin trained and well named BIGIRONONHISSHIP , the 5 year old gelding had won a ptp back in May and he was always going well in behind, it was  a 3 horse race coming to the last when Neil Alexanders LAKEVIEW LAD fell leaving the winner and Sandy Thomsons THE DUTCHMAN to fight it out,the Rose Dobbin horse stayed on best in the testing ground to land the prize,I fancy all 3 will be winning in turn for their respective  yards.
Lucy Alexander who has had a fantastic season landed both 2nd and 3rd races and the second of these for her father’s yard with the improving CLAN LEGEND who defied top weight and a rising mark to comfortably give Lucy a double on the day after LOCHGELL won the 32 red hurdle.
PRESENTED landed the 3 mile chase but you have to think he was a little  fortunate as SILVER TASSIE  for Micky Hammonds yard looked all over the winner when young Finian  O’Toole asked him for big one at final fence and he blundered and unseated leaving PRESENTED with race at his mercy.
YES TOM returned  to  something like his best form after a couple of poor efforts to win the class 2 hurdle for his Irish connections , has to be noted that BOB’S LADY TAMURE was in process of running a fine race for Maurice Barnes when he fell at final fence and this one can surely take advantage of his mark in coming months.
WILLIE HALL who has been running consistently well for his new yard since winning at Hexham in March and coming back from a 151 day break, he has been placed 2nd in 3 of his 4 starts and he got his rewards today when getting up late to just hold off W Coltherds QUICK DECISION  by a half length.
The finale on a great days racing was the bumper and Sandy Thomson rounded of what had been a fantastic start to the year when his SPIRIT OF KAYF  took up running 3 furlongs out and despite being pressed by REIVERS LAD who stumbled at around the 2 furlong marker, he out stayed the Nicky  Richards  horse on the testing ground to land it comfortably , it has to Be noted Brian Harding was not too hard on this one after his stumble and his race was gone for today, there will be other days with this one though.
